Common Guidelines for Math 235: Linear Algebra ============================================== Each instructor has a webpage indicating office hours and other individual features. Text: Linear Algebra with Applications (4E) by Otto Bretscher. Topics: Most sections of chapters 1-7. Instructors should set their own pace (consistent with the goal for the Common exams) and may skip sections 5.4, 7.1, 7.6 and parts of 5.2, 5.3, 5.5, 6.3 and 7.5. Common Midterm: Thursday 11 March 7-9PM in Hasbrouck 20 (topics through chapter 3). In case of a conflict, at least one week (written) advance notice must be given the instructor so that the student can make-up the Common Midterm. Jennie d'Ambroise will proctor a make-up Common Midterm 9 March 7-9PM in LGRT 111 for those students with a documented conflict, and the course chair will proctor a second make-up Common Midterm 11 March 4-6PM in LGRT 1535 for any remaining students with a conflict (documented in advance, as above). Other make-up needs (e.g. medical emergencies) will be handled by individual instructors. Common Final: The final exam is scheduled for Thursday 6 May 8-10AM in Totman Gym. Please contact Prof. Peter Norman (norman@math.umass.edu) if there is an issue which your instructor cannot handle directly (Prof. Kusner should be copied in on your email as well, please). Grading: At least half the grade should be derived from the common exams (the midterm and final each comprise at least a quarter), with the remaing grade derived from homework and other classwork (quizzes, mini-midterms, and the like). Each instructor determines the final grade, but all instructors will use a uniform method in converting percentage intervals to letter grades, according to the following (preliminary, subject to revision) guidelines: [0..{F}..40..{D-,D,D+}..55..{C-,C,C+}..70..{B-,B,B+}..85..{A-,A}..100]
